GUNDOG WORKING TESTS
The Golden Retriever Club of Victoria held one of the first Novice Gundog Working Tests (originally called Gundog Obedience Test) in April 1989 after this new competition was introduced. We were the first club to hold an Open Gundog Working Test in April 1992. These tests were held each year until 1997 in conjunction with our Restricted to Gundog Obedience Trial.
In a Gundog Working Test the dog and handler are required to perform some basic obedience and retrieving tasks. The tests were designed as a stepping stone to field and retrieving trials.
The work of dogs in a Gundog Working Test should relate to work in retrieving and field trials. For example where a dog is required to stay it may remain in the sit, stand or down position, the essence of the test being the ability of the dog to remain steady.
Certificates for successful completion of the test were awarded, but there were no titles awarded in Gundog Working Tests. Three passes in Novice were required before a dog was eligible to compete in an Open Working Test.
