Puppy Information

Print this page for reference.

If you are serious about buying a Golden Retriever, here are some questions you should ask the breeder: -

Why is the breeder having this litter?

How long has the breeder been breeding Goldens?

Does the breeder encourage prospective puppy buyers to visit and see their stock?

Will the whole litter be available for viewing?

What is the temperament of the dam and sire?

Do both the sire and dam hold current clear eye certificates? (need to be up dated annually) Ask to see these certificates.

Are both the sire and dam x-rayed for hip dysplasia? Ask to see the certificates.

What are the parents & grandparents scores? (The current breed average is approx 18 - from M Willis)

(Dogs with unknown hip status should not be bred from)

*some breeders now have elbows X-rayed & scored

(Hip & elbow displaysia is only detectable from evaluation by x-ray)

How old is the dam?

(Should be at least 18 months old before having a litter)

Has the dam had a litter previously? When?

(Once a year is the most a bitch should be bred from)

Does the puppy come with information on worming, feeding and vaccinations?

You will need this information.

Will the breeder be available to help you as the puppy grows?

What age will the puppy be when you can take it home?

(The GRCV Inc. and the VCA say "not before 8 weeks")

Does the breeder have some hold on the puppy after you buy it?

(Agreements on breeding should be discussed and understood by both parties. Any agreements should be in writing)

Will the breeder pick your puppy or do you select it?

(Remember the breeder has experience in placing puppies and will have more idea which puppy will suit you)

How much will the puppy cost? Is a deposit required?

QUESTIONS THE BREEDER SHOULD ASK OF YOU:-

Why have you decided on a golden retriever?

Have you any other pets? If yes, what?

Have you any experience with owning and training a dog?

Is your property well fenced?

Where will the dog sleep?

Is everyone in the family happy about a golden retriever joining the family?

Have you a safe place to leave your golden when you are away from home?

Who will attend to the feeding, socializing, and training of the puppy?

Do you intend to use your golden retriever for conformation show, obedience trials or breeding?

Have you any experience in the above?

Will you attend obedience classes with your puppy?

If you are buying your golden retriever as a pet will you de-sex it?

To Whom It May Concern:

Further to your inquiry, I’d like to say congratulations on your choice to purchase a Golden Retriever puppy. With care and training your puppy will be most eager to please you, with that well-known Golden Retriever temperament.

Here is a little information about our club, of which we hope you will become a member.

The Golden Retriever Club of Victoria was formed in 1967 by a meeting of Golden Retriever enthusiasts and was incorporated in 1986. The Club has grown since then to a point where it now has a membership of over 400 spread throughout Australia and overseas. As a member of the Club, you are welcome to attend any meeting or event conducted by the Club. Please note, however, that should you wish to compete in any show or trial you must be a member of the Victorian Canine Association (VCA).

During a typical year, the Club organises and conducts:

5 Members Competitions

A Fun Day

An Open Show

2 Retrieving Trials

2 Field Trials

Retrieving Training Days

A Championship Show

An Obedience Trial

Social Events

Gundog Obedience Training

Obedience Competitions

A Gundog Obedience Trial

Quarterly General Meetings

An important part of our Club is the Recovery Service, which was formed to help find loving homes for lost and abandoned Goldens.

A Monthly newsletter is provided to members. It includes articles of vital interest to Golden owners which are not normally available from other sources. The newsletter provides the main link between the Club and its members.

During the year we arrange for guest speakers to talk on the many facets relating to dog ownership. New members and visitors are most welcome to attend. You are also invited to attend our General meetings; details on the date and venue of these meetings are given in the newsletter.

I believe that if you are interested in your chosen breed and want to find out more about the breed and how to care for your Golden, membership of the Club that represents the breed is essential. You will find a membership application form enclosed. Should you require any further information on general care of your dog or any other matter, please contact the Club’s Secretary on the phone number below.

I look forward to seeing you at our future Golden activities, please seek me out and introduce yourself and do not hesitate to ask any questions.

Kind Regards,

CODE OF ETHICS

VCA CODE OF ETHICS

Members must abide by the VCA Code of Ethics

STANDARD OF THE BREED

The Breed Standard is a written criterion developed by the Golden Retriever Club of the United Kingdom and accepted by the Victorian Canine Association (VCA), which describes the perfect Golden Retriever. With this in mind members should breed to conform to the Rules and Regulations of the VCA and must maintain accurate breeding and litter records.

VCA REGISTRATION

Each Dog to be used for breeding or to be shown or worked must be properly registered with the VCA. All breeders must conform to the Rules and Regulations of the VCA and must maintain accurate breeding and litter records.

HEREDITARY DEFECTS

Members should endeavour to breed dogs that are free from hereditary defects including Hip Dysplasia, eye disorders (which include Cataracts, PRA, Distichiasis and Entropian), bad temperament and structural defects.

GENERAL HEALTH

Members should endeavour to maintain the best possible health and care of all their dogs and to have their dogs regularly checked by their veterinarian.

BREEDING

Members shall not breed from a bitch before it is 18 months of age and not on the first season. A bitch should only be used for breeding when she is in good health. Bitches must not have a litter within 12 months of a previous litter.

SELLING OR DONATION OF PUPPIES OR DOGS

Members shall not sell or donate puppies or dogs to commercial, wholesale or retail outlets or for raffle prizes, etc. Members should not sell Golden Retrievers to a person knowing that the recipient is acting as a dealer or is a dog re-seller. Only bona fide breeding and the sale of puppies can be condoned by the club. Members should endeavour to place their puppies in good homes and not be frightened to carefully vet the prospective new owners. Members should encourage puppy owners to call them if the owners have any problems. Members should maintain regular contact with all puppy buyers where possible.

STUD DOG OWNERS

Stud dog owners should be selective in the bitches they accept, in terms of soundness and hereditary defects. They also have an obligation to assist the breeder when needed and/or requested.

PURCHASING GOLDEN RETRIEVERS

No member shall purchase or obtain a Golden Retriever for the purpose of resale.

OVERSEAS SALES

Members shall only sell a Golden Retriever overseas to a person who resides in a country that enforces efficient and effective anti-cruelty laws.

HONESTY IN REPRESENTATION

Members should represent their dogs as honestly as possible and not use misleading or untruthful statements in selling or advertising, nor denigrate other owners or breeders. Remember that the welfare of the breed comes before personal benefit.

COMMUITY RELATIONS

Members should ensure that their dogs are not a nuisance to their neighbours or the community in general and that they are properly supervised and controlled at all times and are given basic behavioural training. They should also be registered with their local municipal council.

SPORTSMANSHIP

Members should show good sportsmanship whether winning or losing at any VCA sanctioned event, and in no way denigrate the dogs of others.

CONDUCT OF MEMBERS

Members have an obligation, as members of the Club, to uphold the honour of and further the objectives of the Club.

Any member failing to observe the provisions of the Code of Ethics may be dealt with under the rules of the Club.
